About the graphic novel
Book 4: Revenge of the bat
The duo finds the treasure cave only to discover that the treasure is not what they think it is. It is SHIKA’S fabled broken sword, and now the deadly bat samurai KOUMORI has arrived to claim it for his master! A battle ensues between WHISKERS and KOUMORI and is interrupted by an earthquake. MANEKI rescues WHISKERS from the earthquake and finally learns the tragic story of why WHISKERS became a samurai without a master.
INABA’S plot is now clear, and MANEKI wants to stop him from releasing the demon HAKASHIN who had once terrorised the world. However, WHISKERS is aware of the enormity of the task and the futility of challenging INABA. He discourages MANEKI.
The Ronin Rat and Ninja Cat Series
The Ronin Rat and Ninja Cat series is the debut comic book mini-series by writer/illustrator Joshua Chiang. Ronin Rat and Ninja Cat is a love letter to classic Chanbara (samurai sword-fighting) movies set in a land of talking animals, giant insects, a bit of magic here and there, and one really big, really destructive Daikaiju!
The 5-book series centres on 2 major characters – WHISKERS a rat who has become a Ronin (a samurai without a master) under mysterious circumstances and MANEKI, a cat burglar who considers himself a Ninja. They form an unlikely partnership in search of an ancient treasure which had started a new line of emperors. But they are not the only ones. Hot on their heels are various groups with different intentions for the treasure. The trials and adventures of Ronin Rat and Ninja Cat peel at the issues of betrayal, loyalty, greed and goodness in the lives of communities.
